Looking back over the past three years of my involvement with the BSES Leadership Development Programme, I have been fortunate enough to meet a variety of young people, keen on leading others in the outdoors. It is only by leading others in a 'real life' situation, and feeling the stress of actual decision-making that affects others, that they can truly appreciate the continual self-improvement learning curve which will make them an outstanding leader in the future. This opportunity has finally been created within the LDP, and will hopefully remain a deeply meaningful experience for this year's YLs.

At the heart of every expedition is a skilled team of scientists, mountain leaders, tropical experts, teachers, career expeditioners, medics and youth workers. The Society benefits from a high return leadership, including Young Explorers who have progressed on to leadership roles and expedition leaders with extensive expedition leading experience.
At the heart of every expedition is a skilled team of scientists, mountain leaders, tropical experts, teachers, career expeditioners, medics and youth workers. For each expedition, the Chief Leader and Expedition Manager assemble a leader team comprising the specific technical skills for the region and the expedition’s projects. All leader positions are voluntary. We believe this creates a special team of individuals devoted to youth development and exploration.
