With over 75 years of leading successful expeditions we have developed a wealth of experience dealing with expedition safety. In addition, all our expeditions are screened by the Young Explorers’ Trust (YET) for independent approval of our planning and we are one of the first organisations to comply with the BSi 8848 safety regulations.
Each expedition is staffed by a highly qualified and experienced medical team, which operates in addition to the leader team (consisting of Chief Leaders, Chief Scientists, Chief Mountaineers, Base Camp Managers, etc.).
We carry out comprehensive risk assessments and have robust major incident management and casualty evacuation plans for every expedition. These are informed by a comprehensive reconnaissance establishing the local medical and emergency services available and are regularly updated and reviewed to ensure they cover all eventualities from natural disasters and political instability to individual medical incidents.
We are part of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office 'know before you go' campaign and maintain close links with the British Authorities in each country we visit.
Each expedition maintains regular communications with both the expedition base camp and the BSES head office in the UK. The BSES office in London provides 24 hour emergency cover for each expedition with the support of a crisis management team.
